Payatas is a barangay (or village) located in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is known for its sprawling landfill site, which is the main dumping ground for the city's garbage. It is one of the largest open dumpsites in Southeast Asia and is a source of livelihood for the informal sector who scavenge for recyclable materials.
Payatas is also known for being one of the most impoverished communities in the country. Many of its residents survive on meager wages and rely on government assistance. Despite being situated close to the city center, the village lacks basic amenities such as proper housing, access to clean water, and waste management facilities.
Despite its challenges, there are efforts underway to improve the living conditions of residents of Payatas, such as housing and livelihood assistance programs, health services, and education initiatives. The community is also known for its vibrant culture, with regular festival and community events showcasing local music, dance, and art.
